Onuaku, who was rumored to return to the KBL, signs with ACB Badalona in Spain…”an energetic player”

Chinanu Onuaku’s rumored return to the KBL is just that, a rumor.

According to European basketball publication EuroHoops, Onuaku has signed a one-season deal with Spanish League (ACB) side Coventry Badalona.

“Badalona have announced the signing of Onuaku ahead of the 2023-24 season. The 26-year-old big man will play in Spain for the first time.”

Onuaku is a very familiar face to KBL fans. He played for Wonju DB in the 2019-20 season and was a dominant defensive big man who was also known for his ‘Kang Baekho free throws’.

In 40 games in 2019-20, Onuaku averaged 14.4 points, 10.3 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.4 steals, and 1.5 blocked shots in 24 minutes and 57 seconds. He tied for the DB lead in the season, which ended early due to COVID-19. He was also named to the defensive five.

However, Onuaku unilaterally terminated his contract with DB ahead of the 2020-21 season, resulting in a two-year suspension. Since then, he has been rumored to return to the KBL, but has only played in Europe, including Croatia and Israel.

It was in Croatia and Israel that Onuaku found his greatest success. He won championships, MVPs, and all the other honors that come with being a player.

Before the 2023-24 season, Onuaku was rumored to return to the KBL once again. This time, however, he would be heading to Europe instead of Korea. This time, it’s Spain.

Onuaku’s new home, Badalona, was a dark horse in the 2022-23 playoffs, reaching the quarterfinals and pulling off an upset over ‘favorites’ Baskonia in the quarterfinals. The team also surprised in the quarterfinals against Real Madrid, winning the first leg. Onuaku will now be in goal for Badalona.

“Onuaku is a player with a lot of energy,” Badalona said on his official website.
