In the top of Miami’s third inning, Coach Reed was hit by a sharp grounder from Jesus Sanchez that she tried to dodge by jumping up and down, but it hit her squarely in the leg.

After signalling that he was fine shortly after being hit, Coach Reed was soon in severe pain and was eventually replaced.

Upon examination, Reed was ultimately diagnosed with a broken leg.

In 11 seasons in the major leagues from 1987 to 1997, Coach Reed batted .270 with 27 home runs and 392 RBIs.

After retirement, he worked in the minor leagues for the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers before taking a position as Miami’s first base coach.

In 2007, Mike Kulba, who had also played in the KBO, died after being struck in the head by a batted ball while coaching first base in a minor league game.

Helmets were subsequently made mandatory for all first base coaches.
